The Tire of the Future / by Julian Kramer

Goodyear has envisioned the tire for the future and reinvented the wheel. Literarily.

In this case the tire is actually a sphere covered in rubber. The car of the future (that looks very familiar to the first Audi car in iRobot) will hover on 4 tire-orbs on a electromagnetic field.

In the vision of the designers this would allow the car to steer more fluid and dynamically by controlling a lateral movement of all 4 wheels, automatically adjust to wear and tear and allow completely new ways of rotating and moving the car in for example parking spaces (to save precious space in urban environments).

While it might still be a long way to go for electromagnetic suspensions for cars, this is one step into the movie-future of 2004.

Which is pretty cool.
